#HonoringKatieBug: How to Honor the 4-Year-Old Who Touched Our Hearts

Over the last few days, thousands of people have shared the story of Katie “Bug” Grantham.  The 4-year-old from Benton, Louisiana died about a week after a car accident.  Her parents bravely shared their emotional and courageous hospital journey on Facebook.

I was one of the many who followed along.  When Katie died, I felt compelled to write about her — particularly the words of her mother who vowed to “honor her” in death.

The post was read more than 20,000 times and shared more than 5,000 times — a testament to this family’s message of kindness, hope, and faith.

Now it’s time to walk the walk.  In a beautifully written obituary, Katie’s mom provided ways to honor her daughter.  Her words:

  • If our baby girl touched you in some way, please let us know (PO Box 367, Benton, LA 71006).
  • In lieu of flowers, please take a new, unwrapped toy to a Toys for Tots drop-off to bring joy to a child in need.
  • Donations can be made to The Hub Ministry or The Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission to help in their ministry.
  • Most of all, if you want to honor Katie Bug Grantham, be kind, love others, laugh a lot with those you love, and love God. Talk to Him. HE will answer. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

I don’t know about you, but I think it would be great to see people flood social media with the ways they’re honoring Katie.  Maybe with a hashtag? #HonoringKatieBug

There’s a lot of negativity on social media.  Let’s spread kindness for Katie.

Start now with the last request.  Having a bad day?  Not in a great mood? You don’t have time for that.  Love instead.

Success! You're on the list.

  1. Although I never got to meet this precious little girl , I was blessed to see her and her Mom one day at her Daddy’s practice while Dr. Kirk was treating my Husbands foot. You could feel the love between the three of them, it was such a blessing to see this between this sweet family. You could tell that little Katie Bug was a real Daddy’s girl, it really touched my heart and now my heart breaks for this family, but they can rest assure that Katie is in a better place and that the family will be reunited someday and she’ll be able to show her Mom and Dad the beautiful place where she had been waiting for them. We love y’all

  2. Praying for this family and community to remember our babies and to be lace them in God’s loving arms. He will always love us and our babies. He gives them to us to care for. He takes them and us home when He wants to hold us

  3. I have never met KatieBug or her precious family but I followed her journey through her Mommies post. I prayed so hard for a miracle from God but as we that are believers know we except Gods plan. My heart was truly touched and I felt like I knew her through her Mommies words. I have said for along time that we all need to learn to love everyone and show our appreciation for life. I will continue to pray for KatieBugs family and friends. Fly High Katie for I know you are with our Sweet Lord now.
